Club Meetings are held on the last Wednesday of each month at the Public Hall in Budleigh Salterton starting at 10.00am. They include the latest Club news, talks and demonstrations by guest speakers, occasionally followed by workshop sessions in the afternoon. The club is open from 9.45am so that members can chat and socialise before the meetings starts. Coffee and tea is provided at a break halfway through the demonstration.  We usually finish at 12pm  but may sometimes go over this time depending on the stage of the demonstration.

There are also other workshops, details are below, booking for these sessions will be opened nearer the time of the event.

We shall also be holding art courses throughout the year and other social activities.

claire western demo & workshop 29.5.24- PETER HALL      ***FULL***

Our demonstrator on 29th May at the Peter Hall is Claire Western. Claire is a well-established artist whose work is shown and sold widely throughout the South West. She has combined painting and teaching over many years. She taught in secondary schools, and was most recently Head of Art at Queen’s College in Taunton.

The distinctive nature of her work lies in her enthusiasm for experimentation and exploration of the expressive possibilities of combining unusual mixed-media materials and methods.

For us she will demonstrate a mixed media, mainly collage piece based on Still Life in the morning.

Her work can be seen on her

Claire will conduct an afternoon workshop at East Budeigh village hall. 1.30 to 4.30. £20.  Participants will prepare mixed media surfaces as backgrounds, then some rich, painted surfaces which will be cut up and collaged over the backgrounds. We will use acrylic paint, sponges, scrapers and stencils to enrich an add detail to the final pieces.

She will provide the objects and everything required to do this, including paints, board, collage materials, sponges etc.

To sign up, complete the form at the bottom of the page.

Our demonstrator for June is Anna Brewster. She is a Bristol-born, Devon-based artist who works primarily with watercolour and ink.  For us she has promised to  bring a lot of flowers and foliage and have a blast using reeds and inks!

In the afternoon workshop members can try out the techniques. Anna will provide India ink for anyone who hasn't got it and reed pens and rough paper.

She says, “I paint what I see on my wanderings around this beautiful county, there is always a sketchbook in my rucksack and pencils lurking in the depths of my pockets along with pinecones, seeds, pebbles and all the other bits and pieces I collect as I go along.

Making art is what I’ve been doing my entire life, in various different media. It’s what I love.”

To sign up please fill out the green workshop sign-up form below quoting Anna Brewster as the workshop name.

31.7.24 peter hall

Our meeting on July 31st at The Peter Hall, will be a demonstration of Pyrography - the art of decorating wood or other materials with burn marks resulting from a controlled application of a heated object. The term actually means writing with fire! We are lucky enough to have Cherry Ferris (not Claire Belcher who we previously advertised) as our demonstrator who has written a book about the subject. Cherry is a self taught artist who likes to explore the beauty, detail and complexity of our wonderful world around us, particularly its animals and nature. She likes to use many types of medium and is versed in Pyrography, Pastels, Watercolour, Artists Coloured Pencils and Oils. Cherry also loves the heightened detail in Botanical Illustration and often uses these techniques, along with many others to create her eclectic variety of Art forms. Cherry often uses the art of 'Pyrography' within her work to burn or scorch designs onto natural materials and surfaces, such as wood panels and Rag Paper then enhance these with various magical Mixed Media techniques to create colourful and enticing results. Inspired by her fascination with colour, pigment and materials, Cherry is at her happiest when she is able to bring them together to create a piece of art. I am sure it will be a very interesting and informative demo and Cherry is happy for us to all have ago with her equipment after her talk and our coffee break when we can ask questions too. She will also arrange a workshop at a later a date if we have enough members interested.
