ANIMAL MAGIC: Watercolour painting by Jake Winkle
Such an exciting demonstration by Jake Winkle who is renowned for his ‘free’ style of working. Today he painted a panda and a highland cow.
Firstly, after stretching his paper and fixing it to a board with tape and staples, he draws the animal and then very loosely goes in with the watercolour paint. He prefers to stand, as he works from his arm rather than his wrist and holds the brush half way up the handle. It was exciting watching the paintings develop so quickly. He needs to work fast before the paint dries to enable the colours to blend together. The palette he uses is hand made in Ludlow and very expensive and apparently there is a long waiting list. This palette enabled him to squeeze colours from his tubes of paint into the centre dishes and he used the outside dishes for mixing his washes.
Certainly everybody picked up a lot of good watercolour tips and thoroughly enjoyed the demo.
