Happy New Year to one and all!
The Art Club membership is now at it’s highest level, so may I wish a very warm welcome to all of the new members who have joined us recently.
Don’t forget, that in addition to our regular monthly meeting which takes place the last Wednesday of every month (excepting August or December) in the Peter Hall, we have recently started a “Drop In” Workshop each second Wednesday of the month in the Temple Methodist Hall from 1.30-5.30 pm. The popular Portrait Workshops continue to be well supported and take place monthly.
This years Calendar of Events will be issued as a hard copy at the January monthly meeting, available on our website www.budleighsaltertonartclub.org.uk and we will send out as an attachment to everyone who uses email. It is obviously subject to amendments, so I would encourage you to look at the club website which also has more detail of each demonstrator, has latest news and interesting articles to read. Please submit anything that you feel would be of interest to club members to either John Washington or Julie Bingham and they can post on the website.
We have our AGM in February and at this time we are still looking for a Chairman, Exhibition Secretaries and Speaker Secretary. So if anyone wants to volunteer or indeed discuss these or any of the committee roles then please let us know. We really must not rely on the same group of people to run the club, it is YOUR club so can I encourage you to actively get involved. The retiring committee members will happily give you as much support as you need so don’t be afraid to come forward.
Can I also remind new members (less than 5 years in the Club) who have not yet won any awards, that each year we have the Bill Cockerill Award which is voted on by members from paintings brought along to the AGM for judging. So if you have a painting which you would like to show, bring it along.
Can I ask everyone attending the January meeting and/or the AGM to arrange to pay their membership dues either by cheque (pre-written payable to BSAC) or cash at those meetings and am happy to confirm that the subscription for 2018-2019 will remain at £20 per member. This figure does not include either the drop-in workshops or portrait workshops, which are £3 per session, payable on the day. We will have the Peter Hall open from 9.30am for both meetings, to allow time to get the membership subs collected. This years membership booklet will be compiled and printed after the AGM, once the membership details are confirmed and subs have been collected. The Calendar of Events will NOT be included and will be handed out separately as detailed above.
We are in early discussions with the Fairlynch Museum to see how we can help them to have the original Millais “Boyhood of Raleigh” painting displayed there during the Summer months. It normally resides in the Tate Museum and our museum are thrilled to be able to have it on loan. They are in the early stages of scoping out the scale of what might end up as a larger exhibition, so as soon as we have more details, we will pass them on.
We also have an exciting opportunity related to this years Budleigh Literary Festival.
Members of the BS Art Club are invited to submit an entry for an internal competition to design the front cover for this year's Literary Festival's Brochure. This will be the 10th year of the Festival and its Artistic Director, Annie Ashworth, would like to encourage the involvement of the local community in this anniversary. The content of the cover should reflect the nature of the Budleigh landscape and might indicate some connection with the literary background (but this is not essential). Examples of previous brochures can be seen on the website or please talk to Ralph or John.
Entries must be in portrait format.
The winning artist will be invited to a drinks reception and given two complimentary tickets to attend the lecture following it. There will be an acknowledgement of the artist and the BS Art Club inside the brochure.
Entries must be submitted by the time of the Art Club's meeting on 28th March: either take them to Roger Bass, 14 Victoria Place, Budleigh Salterton EX9 6JP at any time (phone 01395 444296) or bring them to the Art Club meeting on the 28th March.’
The display of members artwork at Bicton College library has been a real success and has had great feedback, so if you would like to have your work on show, then please talk to John Washington who is in communication with the college.
Don’t forget this is your club, so if you have any ideas, questions or observations on how you think we could improve or expand our activities then please let us know. But be prepared to lend a hand, don’t expect someone else to do it for you.
Let’s all have a happy and productive 2018! Happy painting!!
Ralph Bingham - Chairman
