A Drawing Day with Ray
for The Venture Group, The Thursday Group and other members of the Club
Shirley Wilkes of The River House, Lympstone arranged a full day with Ray Balkwill. Several of us arrived at her home for a prompt start at 10am enjoying a welcome coffee and biscuits while Ray gave an excellent talk on the importance of tonal sketching with strong composition.
He showed many examples of his way of working and how useful these were for developing more considered paintings.
We all chose individual places to start our masterpieces while Ray hunted us out to give advice and praise.
Rain arrived towards lunchtime when we were welcomed back at the River House for a glass of wine and one of Shirley’s fantastic luncheons.
Out to brave the elements for an hour or so until rain stopped play. Inside again when Ray very generously gave a demo using graphite, biro and charcoal. A further indoor session for us to try new skills followed by tea, cake and critique.
A truly enjoyable day, Many thanks to Shirley, Ray and fellow artists.
